I bought mine from jpc.de and it has similar sides. A on A and A on side B!)))Maybe i could sell it for a million dollars since years!)))But sounds very good, no cracks, very dynamic and clean. Ordered 1977 reissue to compare.
Na
Is it me or is this somewhat bleary or low on treble? I wish i had a 74 UK pressing to compare. My reference is my HDCD version (30th anniversary) which sounds fantastic.

For new users, this is my personal advice for the digital version: go for the first edition without barcode, the Jem version. It's the first original mastering, the only one that really show the pathos of this title. The second remaster (Definitive Edition,1989) is very good, but was a bit equalized. Don't buy the 30th Anniversary and don't buy, don't listen, the Wilson remix...it's the worst of all, really. He said some years ago that the original mixing of Red was yet perfect and after....he touched it. It's a bit difficult in these days to find the first pressing in cd, but worth it.
Phain
Can't get much better than this, Peckham mastered Crimson. Has so much more presence and clarity than my 1st US press had. The one to get if you love this album.
Siralune
I haven't heard the first pressing so I can't compare. The only other version I heard of this album is the FLAC version of the 40th anniversary mix which is remastered by Steven Wilson. As far as I'm concerned this is a very good sounding pressing on Vinyl. No Cracks and pops even in the quiet parts of " Providence ". And the album sounds really powerful and brutal as it should. Tho I'm kinda disappointed by the packaging . I mean it's just the cover and that's it . there isn't any gatefold , Lyrics sheet or anything. I guess Robert Fripp doesn't like fun. But if you want Red in your Vinyl collection, This version is good enough.
Cointrius
I would advise people to ditch this edition of "Red" because a) the digital remix on disc 2 sounds like it was recorded to an iPhone and b) the bonus tracks are superfluous -- unless, of course, you want to hear two more minutes of "Providence" or a skeletal version of "Red" without any of the great guitar overdubs. Just buy the original five-track album and you will be happy.
Whatever
Really great sound from these reissues. My only gripe might be the recessed drums, but since Ive never heard an original to compare with for all I know the recording or mix is just like that. Very probable since they pick up a bit more after the first 2 tracks. But mostly everything else is just as crisp and clear as Id like it all the way through, without being sibilant mind you. Something which few digital records manage these days. Very pleasant to listen to if you like the "pressure" this album has.Likely the best sounding version after a mint first press which is too hard to obtain to even consider. Especially if you want a quiet passage of Providence which at least my new copy provided. There is surface noise but it stays rather low. Next to no pops either and the few that jumped out of my speakers I suspect were static discharges. Ill do an update once the record is cleaned. I found Starless especially fantastic sounding and probably the worst sounding part being the clapping on One More Red Nightmare, very 1 dimensional compared to the rest, again probably its just mixed that way, although some extra mastering work could have been done there. With a sort of flimsy jacket of very thin cardboard albeit with nice aesthetic I still think the package quality is just overall outstanding. Cant recommend it enough to anyone getting into King Crimson.Equipment used:Rega RP1 with Nagaoka MP-110 cartridgeCyrus 2 amplifier System Fidelity SF5030 tower speakersCustom made HQ speaker cables

Starless - what can you say about one of the greatest melodies for guitar (or violin, or for any instrument for that matter) of all time - a melody of melancholy and hope all rolled into one. A timeless melody encompassing all human experience. One of the best songs ever written. That's about it.
terostr
This is the first edition of the album released in Spain in 1974.
Mall
Fantastic pressing of this record, which in general is fairly low on bass and high on treble. The cover is very thick, and shiny as well.
Saberdragon
No issues with my copy, especially on Providence. It is a "warm" mix, almost too much correction for 1974 original, like too much dolby...but other than that a very good pressing and super quiet vinyl.
Malhala
Arguably one of the greatest Prog albums of all time. Although hard to eclipse the influence that their first LP had on the genre, I would say this LP is the pinnacle of power and grace for Krimso. Starless is one of my 5 favorite pieces of music, alongside Supper's Ready, Abbey Road suite from side 2, Arriving Somewhere (But Not Here), and Shine On You Crazy Diamond. This was the album Kurt Cobaine had in his disc player when he ended his life, I like to imagine that Starless was the track he went out on. Morbid, but oddly fitting.
Xcorn
I hear some say it was an R.E.M CD but I dunno.
RUsich155
Yes, I would agree with you on pretty much on all you said, especially the last bit - what is life about, anyway ? Starless is the song that tries to answer that - and of course, to no avail. Great review.
ᵀᴴᴱ ᴼᴿᴵᴳᴵᴻᴬᴸ
My copy is like variant 2 but with Mould SID Code: IFPI AAHP5.
Meztisho
No postcard inside mine but doesn't mention the mp3's on the sticker. My ITCOTCK came with mp3's but the sticker didn't mention it.
Jerdodov
Bit underwhelming listening experience, mastering sounds lifeless and, well, digital, Bruford's cymbals and strange percussions suffer the most. For most part a very quiet pressing but ''Providence'' is just horribly plagued by crackles, pops and weird distortions, too bad.
Karon
I supposedly have this version 88 345 XOT but the ISLAND word doesn't appear to be in the cover. Pity there's not a photo of the back cover here.Anyway, the sticker on the vinyl is also not the one shown here. Instead it shows the same photo as the back cover, with the tracklist for each side. I simply don't know if this a cheap copy or a super rare one. Will I ever know?
Hurus
Unfortunately, no. I also got "busted" let's say but the sound is not that bad for me.
Malaris
Yes! That's the one I got! Do you know more of this copy? Thank you for commenting!
Cordalas
I uploaded some photos of this one and added the etchings of both sides here: http://www.discogs.com/release/6857854Perhaps, that's your copy?
Rare
slightly muddy audio on this issue
Black_Hawk_Down.
Mine is great, perhaps you got a dud copy?
Hallolan
This is one of the greatest albums ever recorded. Buy every version you can find.

I'm wondering if this really is a new 2009 stereo mix. There is no evidence anywhere to be found on that (not on the CD, not at burningshed). I think it would be mentioned if it were the case. Production rights for the stereo mix are 2004, the year the 30th Anniversary edition was released. Also, other 40th Anniversary editions have the 30th Anniversary mix included on the DVD, and this one conspicuously hasn't. All this leads me to conclude that the stereo mixes on this edition are the same as the 30th Anniversary mix. Anyone know more?
Rrinel
There was a 2013 Steven Wilson/Robert Fripp stereo mix released on CD http://stevenwilsonhq.com/sw/headphonedust/king-crimson-red-2cd/. This link to the DVDA http://stevenwilsonhq.com/sw/headphonedust/king-crimson-red-cddvd/ states that it contains the original album in HiRes Stereo and the Steven Wilson 5.1 mix.
Xtintisha
I think you're right blammo... The contents of this dvd is sparse when compared to the other 40th Anniversary releases. Original 1974 version later re-released only on cd.
Asyasya
For me it sounds a little hard. Maybe this music has to breathe and the best to be listened to is on tubed systems. On my system it sounds demanding and a little uneasy. Great album though. My favorite still remains 'Larks Tongues in Aspic' and 'In The Court Of The Crimson King'. In general remastering don't adds something better to the music. Very, very often is a decline. Take that in mind buying such pressings.
